Importance of Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually from October 23rd-October 31st . This week is used to raise awareness for drug and alcohol use and violence. Drugs and Alcohol use can have severe consequences for both adults and minors.

Red Ribbon week is an active campaign that helps many students learn the dangers of substances. Consider that the Brain is not done developing until we are around 25 years old. When more alcohol and drugs are consumed it increases the risk for bodily complications down the line.

CCHS takes Red Ribbon Week very seriously and encourages students to stay away from substances and to seek help if they need it. The school is pushing for “Positive Peer Pressure,” an interesting take on the peer pressure expression. They encourage students to interact with their peers and make a positive difference in a friend's life.

The Red Ribbon Association hosts a national photo contest each year to encourage participation in the movement. Both schools and families can enter the contest. The prizes include an Apple IPad and $1000.

The more awareness brought to drug and alcohol abuse, the more people that can spread the message about the dangers of using it. The subject has been taboo for many years but as society progresses so do people. People are now in a better position and more educated than ever before on how to help addicts. Encouraging people to seek help when they are struggling could save their life. With the state of the world today more people are turning to drugs and alcohol to cope and stepping in may be someone's saving grace.

Red Ribbon week has a significant place in schools across the country and brings so much conversation to the table for students and teachers alike. One way to help is to continue to encourage each other to make the right decisions and stay away from the dangers of substances.

There are many resources for those with an addiction, one of those being, The national Abuse and Addiction Hotline (1-844-289-0879). Getting help can be scary but it can also save your life.
